Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

What is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning or development. ADHD symptoms can manifest in three presentations:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive:
Challenges with focus, organization, and sustaining attention.
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive:
Difficulty sitting still, excessive talking, or impulsive decision-making.
  3. Combined Presentation:
A mixture of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.

Executive Function and ADHD

ADHD frequently involves deficits in executive functioning, the brain processes responsible for:

  • Planning and organization.
  • Time management and task prioritization.
  • Sustaining attention and effort.
  • Emotional regulation and self-monitoring.

These deficits can lead to academic struggles, difficulty maintaining employment, challenges in relationships, and reduced self-esteem. Socially, individuals with ADHD may experience peer rejection or teasing and are at higher risk for accidents, substance use disorders, and other complications.

Why Comprehensive Testing Matters

An accurate ADHD diagnosis is critical for effective treatment and support. Comprehensive testing at CEH goes beyond identifying ADHD symptoms by evaluating related factors such as:

  • Cognitive abilities.
  • Academic strengths and challenges.
  • Emotional and behavioral functioning.

This thorough approach ensures that individuals receive the tools and accommodations they need to thrive in school, work, and daily life.

The ADHD Evaluation Process

At CEH, our ADHD evaluation process is designed to provide a thorough and individualized understanding of your or your child’s challenges. Here’s what to expect:

Step 1: Intake Session

  • For children (ages 4–14): Parents meet with a clinician to discuss concerns, developmental history, and the testing process.
  • For adolescents (14+) and adults: The individual being evaluated attends the intake session and provides consent for information-sharing.

Step 2: Testing Appointments

Testing sessions are tailored to the individual’s needs and typically occur over:

  • One to Two sessions (1–2.5 hours each) for younger individuals.

Testing Includes:

1.Cognitive Testing (when warranted):

  • Evaluates cognitive abilities such as attention, memory, and problem-solving.
  • May include tests of executive functions, like planning and time management.

2.Standardized Assessments:

  • ADHD rating scales to assess symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.
  • Emotional functioning measures to evaluate mood, behavior, and personality.

3.Academic Testing (if applicable):

  • Assesses reading, writing, and math skills to identify strengths and challenges.
  • Helps determine if difficulties are related to ADHD, a specific learning disorder, or both.

4.Behavioral and Emotional Questionnaires:

  • Completed by parents, teachers, and the individual (when appropriate).

Step 3: Feedback and Recommendations

  • A comprehensive report with a clear diagnosis (if applicable) and personalized recommendations for interventions, accommodations, or additional resources will be provided and explained to you clearly in a one-on-one meeting with a clinician who will answer any questions.

At CEH, we provide comprehensive psychoeducational testing for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to support accurate diagnosis and develop personalized strategies for success. Our evaluations assess not only ADHD symptoms but also related challenges in executive functioning, academic performance, and social-emotional development. Whether you’re seeking clarity about symptoms, guidance for school or work accommodations, or effective treatment options, CEH is here to help.
