Binge Eating Disorder

What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is an eating disorder characterized by recurring episodes of consuming large quantities of food in a short period, often accompanied by feelings of loss of control. Unlike other eating disorders, binge eating is not followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging or excessive exercise. Individuals with BED often experience significant emotional distress, guilt, or shame about their eating habits, which can impact their physical health and emotional well-being.

BED is one of the most common eating disorders and can affect individuals of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. It is linked to serious health risks, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, as well as mental health conditions like depression and anxiety.

Signs of Binge Eating Disorder

Key symptoms of BED include:

  • Eating unusually large amounts of food quickly and to the point of discomfort.
  • Feeling unable to control eating during a binge.
  • Eating in secret due to embarrassment.
  • Experiencing shame, guilt, or distress after binge episodes.
  • No compensatory behaviors like purging or fasting.
