About Dr. Schmitz
Dr. Theresa Schmitz is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and the Director of Couples and Family Therapy at CEH.
Dr. Schmitz brings expertise in couples and family therapy, utilizing a number of evidence-based therapies such as Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy (CBCT), Behavioral Couples Therapy for SUD (BCT for SUD), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), amongst others. Dr. Schmitz has worked with couples and families from a variety of backgrounds, working to address a variety of clinical concerns, such as communication difficulties, trauma, recovering from infidelity, and issues around intimacy. Dr. Schmitz also provides psychoeducation and intervention targeting parenting skills and education.
Dr. Schmitz also has extensive experience in treating affective and anxiety disorders, from adjustment concerns to depression, social or generalized anxiety to PTSD. Dr. Schmitz utilizes a variety of evidence based interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), CBT for Depression, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Dr. Schmitz also brings expertise to address a range of behavioral concerns, with experience in delivering evidence based interventions to address insomnia (CBT for insomnia, or CBT-I), nightmares (Imagery Rehearsal Therapy, or IRT, a nightmare re-scripting therapy), smoking cessation treatments, and interventions to improve social skills and increase behavioral activation.
Dr. Schmitz earned her Ph.D. and Masters of Arts from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and her Bachelor of Science from the Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Schmitz has provided psychological services across a wide variety of settings, including community mental health clinics, city court systems, non-profit treatment organizations, hospitals, and private practice.
Dr. Schmitz has been involved in clinical research since 2002, presenting findings at numerous national conferences and publishing original research in the peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Schmitz completed a fellowship at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center. She is active in several professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. Dr. Schmitz is an active member of the couples and family Special Interest Groups or Divisions in each of these professional organizations.
